Fire rated doors or fire doors play a vital role in keeping any inhabitants safe from injury and loss of life. This is especially important when there are large number of people in one room, like in a lecture hall at a university. Fire doors preserve the building and structure by decreasing the speed of fire and smoke and they also stop the fire from spreading to other buildings. It provides an easy escape during the event of fire and helps students and staff to move into a place of safety.

Sound and noise control is also particularly important in any educational facility. Sound insulation refers to the process of putting up an acoustic barrier between a sound source and receiver.

Varikust® acoustic fire doors provide the best of both worlds. You get the right protection, as well as a door that helps manage noise and sound from the outside environment.

14 Varikust® VK105F Class D 48dB double acoustic fire doors with a height of 2400mm and a width of 1800mm finished in Storm Grey Melawood (non-fire side) and rigidized 5WL SS430 (fire side) were locally manufactured, supplied and installed at the University of the Free State.

Additionally to the above, various specified Varikust® acoustic doors were also supplied and installed; 11 Varikust® VK105 48dB acoustic single doors and 14 Varikust® VK62 43dB double acoustic doors. All of these were finished in Storm Grey Melawood on both sides.

Now that the noise penetrating from the outside to the inside of the lecture hall is under control, various sized Absorption panels were manufacture and installed on the walls to address the issues of reverberated sound and high frequency reverberation times.
